That heat field expands a plate anchored on the left. Hotter cells grow.

The interesting failures sit between the analyses.

A structural model will not notice that the part is too hot to be that stiff. A prescribed wall temperature will not notice that the flow separated. Pick a pair.

Rows and columns are the same four fields. Pick a pair — the diagonal is that field alone.

Thermal–mechanical

Differential expansion is a load. A temperature field that was treated as a fixed boundary moves the stress concentration, and a deforming contact can move the heat path back. We couple them when life, leak, or residual shape is the decision. One-way if the geometry barely changes. Staggered, or monolithic, if a gap or a contact depends on temperature.

Typical hardware. Turbine disks, weld distortion, press fits, exhaust hardware.

Method

  1. 01

    Name the decision

Before a mesh exists we write the number that would change the hardware, and the number that would not. A study without that sentence does not start.

  2. 02

    Couple less than you fear

Only the fields that can move the decision get a solver. The rest stay boundary conditions, named as such, with a note on what would promote them.

  3. 03

    Mesh the gradient

Contacts, fillets, films, and current crowds get the elements. Logos, fasteners that do not load, and pretty CAD do not.

  4. 04

    Make it close

An energy or force balance that closes, a coarsening check, and a comparison to the test you already have — or a written statement that you do not have one.

  5. 05

    Hand back a change

A plot is not the deliverable. The deliverable is what to alter, what it costs, and how sure we are. The plot is the evidence.

One studio. A worldwide circle.

Solum means the ground under the part, and also only — the only physics we will turn on. The studio was founded in Cluj-Napoca in 2014. We do not sell software, and we do not staff a body shop.

The mesh is built here. Collaborators are not all here. A structural lead, a thermal specialist, or the person who already owns the CFD joins from the program: Stuttgart, Lyon, Turin, Detroit, Nagoya, Bengaluru. They are not branch offices. A pin on a map is not a model.

We work in the commercial structural, thermal, and CFD codes a program already trusts, and in our own coupling driver when a vendor scheme cannot hold the interface. The name of the code does not appear in the conclusion.

Name the decision the hardware has to survive. We will build the smallest model that can defend it.
